CWE-20Published: August 7, 2017· Updated: Jun 17, 2026
Official Description
The decodenetnum function in ntpd in NTP 4.2.x before 4.2.8p4, and 4.3.x before 4.3.77 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure) via a 6 or mode 7 packet containing a long data value.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2015-7855 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
Exploitation requires low privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
A successful exploit results in availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 6.5.
A proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit exists for CVE-2015-7855. While not yet confirmed in active campaigns, the availability of PoC code increases exploitation risk substantially.
