Official Description
The NETGEAR WNR2000v5 router leaks its serial number when performing a request to the /BRS_netgear_success.html URI. This serial number allows a user to obtain the administrator username and password, when used in combination with the CVE-2016-10176 vulnerability that allows resetting the answers to the password-recovery questions.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2016-10175 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.
A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
A proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit exists for CVE-2016-10175. While not yet confirmed in active campaigns, the availability of PoC code increases exploitation risk substantially.
