Official Description
Stack-based buffer overflow in the run_init_sbus function in the KCodes NetUSB module for the Linux kernel, as used in certain NETGEAR products, TP-LINK products, and other products, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by providing a long computer name in a session on TCP port 20005.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2015-3036 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
A proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit exists for CVE-2015-3036. While not yet confirmed in active campaigns, the availability of PoC code increases exploitation risk substantially.
