CVE-2026-7374

CWE-59Published: May 26, 2026· Updated: May 28, 2026

9.9
CVSS v3.1

Official Description

A flaw was found in KubeVirt's virt-handler component. This vulnerability allows an authenticated OpenShift user with edit permissions in a single namespace to exploit improper symlink validation when connecting to virtual machine console sockets. By replacing the console socket with a symlink to the host's container runtime (CRI-O) socket, an attacker can hijack virt-handler's privileged connection. This enables the attacker to access any Unix socket on the host, potentially leading to full control of the node and the entire cluster.

Risk Analysis

This critical vulnerability in KubeVirt's virt-handler component allows an authenticated OpenShift user with edit permissions to achieve full control of the node and cluster. With a CVSS score of 9.9, this flaw is extremely severe. The absence of an EPSS score means its exploitation likelihood is currently unknown, but its impact is catastrophic.

No public exploit is currently known for this vulnerability. While it requires authenticated access, its network attack vector and low attack complexity indicate it is remotely exploitable.

Recommended Action

Apply the latest security updates for KubeVirt to address this symlink validation flaw. Implement strict access controls and monitor for suspicious activity related to virtual machine console sockets.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-7374 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.

Exploitation requires low privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.

A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.9.

The vulnerability has a "Changed" scope, meaning successful exploitation can impact components beyond the vulnerable component itself — such as the host operating system or adjacent services.
