CVE-2026-29796
CWE-306Published: March 20, 2026· Updated: Mar 23, 2026
Official Description
WebSocket endpoints lack proper authentication mechanisms, enabling attackers to perform unauthorized station impersonation and manipulate data sent to the backend. An unauthenticated attacker can connect to the OCPP WebSocket endpoint using a known or discovered charging station identifier, then issue or receive OCPP commands as a legitimate charger. Given that no authentication is required, this can lead to privilege escalation, unauthorized control of charging infrastructure, and corruption of charging network data reported to the backend.
Risk Analysis
This critical vulnerability in WebSocket endpoints lacks proper authentication, enabling attackers to impersonate charging stations and manipulate backend data. With a CVSS score of 9.4, this flaw poses a high risk, as it can lead to privilege escalation, unauthorized control of charging infrastructure, and data corruption. The absence of an EPSS score and KEV listing means current exploitation is not confirmed, but the severity warrants immediate attention.
No public exploit is known for this vulnerability. The flaw is remotely exploitable (AV:N) with low attack complexity, allowing unauthenticated attackers to connect to OCPP WebSocket endpoints.
Implement robust authentication mechanisms for all WebSocket endpoints to prevent unauthorized access. Ensure that all charging station identifiers are properly authenticated before processing OCPP commands.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-29796 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.
A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), with a CVSS base score of 9.4.
