CVE-2025-47827
Published: October 14, 2025
Official Description
IGEL OS contains a use of a key past its expiration date vulnerability that allows for Secure Boot bypass. The igel-flash-driver module improperly verifies a cryptographic signature. Ultimately, a crafted root filesystem can be mounted from an unverified SquashFS image.
CISA KEV Advisory
IGEL OS Use of a Key Past its Expiration Date Vulnerability
IGEL OS contains a use of a key past its expiration date vulnerability that allows for Secure Boot bypass. The igel-flash-driver module improperly verifies a cryptographic signature. Ultimately, a crafted root filesystem can be mounted from an unverified SquashFS image.
Apply mitigations per vendor instructions, follow applicable BOD 22-01 guidance for cloud services, or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable.
Risk Analysis
IGEL OS has a vulnerability where it uses an expired key, allowing for a Secure Boot bypass due to improper cryptographic signature verification in the igel-flash-driver module. This high-severity flaw enables the mounting of a crafted root filesystem from an unverified SquashFS image. Its presence in CISA's KEV catalog confirms active exploitation, and the EPSS score of 0.01154 indicates a low but present likelihood of exploitation.
This vulnerability is actively being exploited in the wild and is listed in CISA's KEV catalog. Exploitation involves crafting a malicious root filesystem.
Update IGEL OS to the latest version to address the key expiration and signature verification issues. Ensure only verified and trusted SquashFS images are used.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2025-47827 requires local access, meaning attackers must already have a foothold on the target system.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
CISA has added CVE-2025-47827 to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, confirming active exploitation in the wild. U.S. federal agencies are required to patch this within the mandated timeframe, and all organizations should treat remediation as urgent.
