CVE-2025-40604
CWE-494Published: November 20, 2025· Updated: Jun 17, 2026
Official Description
Download of Code Without Integrity Check Vulnerability in the SonicWall Email Security appliance loads root filesystem images without verifying signatures, allowing attackers with VMDK or datastore access to modify system files and gain persistent arbitrary code execution.
Risk Analysis
A critical vulnerability in SonicWall Email Security appliances allows attackers to gain persistent arbitrary code execution. The flaw involves the loading of root filesystem images without integrity checks, enabling modification of system files if an attacker has VMDK or datastore access. With a CVSS score of 9.8, this vulnerability is extremely urgent due to the potential for complete system takeover.
No public exploit is currently known for this vulnerability. Its remote exploitability (AV:N) and low attack complexity (AC:L) highlight a significant risk if an exploit were to be developed.
Apply the latest firmware updates to all SonicWall Email Security appliances. Ensure strict access controls are in place for VMDK and datastore access to prevent unauthorized modifications.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2025-40604 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.
A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
