CWE-120Published: September 3, 2024· Updated: Jun 17, 2026

9.8
CVSS v3.1

Official Description

PingCAP TiDB v8.1.0 was discovered to contain a buffer overflow via the component expression.ExplainExpressionList. This vulnerability allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) via a crafted input. NOTE: PingCAP maintains that the actual reproduction of this issue did not cause the security impact of service interruption to other users. They argue that this is a complex query bug and not a DoS vulnerability.

Risk Analysis

PingCAP TiDB v8.1.0 contains a buffer overflow in the expression handling component that can be triggered by crafted input. While the vendor disputes the impact as a denial of service, the CVSS score of 9.8 reflects the potential for severe system disruption.

There is no public exploit circulating, and it is not in the CISA KEV. It is remotely exploitable with low complexity.

Recommended Action

Users should consult PingCAP documentation for updates or guidance on mitigating potential service interruptions related to this component.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2024-41433 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.

The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.

A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
