CISA KEV Advisory
VMware vCenter Server Heap-Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
VMware vCenter Server contains a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the implementation of the DCERPC protocol. This vulnerability could allow an attacker with network access to the vCenter Server to execute remote code by sending a specially crafted packet.
Apply mitigations per vendor instructions or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable.
Risk Analysis
This vulnerability in VMware vCenter Server is a heap-based buffer overflow in the DCERPC protocol, which could allow an attacker to execute code remotely. Given its high EPSS score of 0.77869 and inclusion in CISA's KEV, this is an urgent vulnerability with confirmed exploitation.
Active exploitation of this vulnerability has been observed in the wild, and it is listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog. An attacker with network access can exploit this remotely by sending a specially crafted packet.
Organizations should apply the latest security updates provided by VMware for vCenter Server to address this heap-based buffer overflow. Restricting network access to vCenter Server to only trusted sources can also help reduce exposure.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2024-38812 requires local access, meaning attackers must already have a foothold on the target system.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
CISA has added CVE-2024-38812 to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, confirming active exploitation in the wild. U.S. federal agencies are required to patch this within the mandated timeframe, and all organizations should treat remediation as urgent.
