CVE-2024-0338
CWE-119Published: February 2, 2024· Updated: Jun 17, 2026
Official Description
A buffer overflow vulnerability has been found in XAMPP affecting version 8.2.4 and earlier. An attacker could execute arbitrary code through a long file debug argument that controls the Structured Exception Handler (SEH).
Risk Analysis
XAMPP 8.2.4 and earlier are vulnerable to a buffer overflow via a long file debug argument, allowing arbitrary code execution. This critical flaw is rated 9.8 CVSS.
No public exploit is known, and it is not in the CISA KEV. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable with low complexity.
Upgrade XAMPP to a version later than 8.2.4 to address the buffer overflow vulnerability.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2024-0338 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.
A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
From a weakness classification perspective (CWE-119): Buffer overflow vulnerabilities can lead to arbitrary code execution or denial of service by corrupting adjacent memory.
