CWE-307Published: December 20, 2023· Updated: Jun 17, 2026
Official Description
Lack of protection against brute force attacks in M-Files Server before 23.12.13205.0 allows an attacker unlimited authentication attempts, potentially compromising targeted M-Files user accounts by guessing passwords.
Risk Analysis
M-Files Server lacks sufficient protection against brute-force attacks, allowing an attacker to perform unlimited authentication attempts. This critical vulnerability could lead to unauthorized account access and potential system compromise.
No public exploit is known, and the vulnerability is not in the CISA KEV. The flaw is remotely exploitable with low attack complexity.
Update M-Files Server to version 23.12.13205.0 or later. Implement account lockout policies and multi-factor authentication to mitigate brute-force risks.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2023-6912 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.
A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
