In a shared hosting environment that has been misconfigured to allow access to other users' content, a Moodle user who also has direct access to the web server outside of the Moodle webroot could utilise a local file include to achieve remote code execution.
Risk Analysis
Moodle is vulnerable to remote code execution in misconfigured shared hosting environments where users have access outside the webroot. This critical flaw allows attackers to leverage local file inclusion to execute arbitrary code.
No public exploit is known, and it is not in the CISA KEV. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable.
Ensure proper server configuration to isolate webroot directories and apply the latest Moodle security patches.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2023-5550 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.
A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
