CVE-2023-51656
CWE-502Published: December 21, 2023· Updated: Jun 17, 2026
Official Description
Deserialization of Untrusted Data vulnerability in Apache IoTDB.This issue affects Apache IoTDB: from 0.13.0 through 0.13.4.
Users are recommended to upgrade to version 1.2.2, which fixes the issue.
Risk Analysis
Apache IoTDB versions 0.13.0 through 0.13.4 are vulnerable to deserialization of untrusted data. This critical flaw allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code, resulting in a CVSS score of 9.8.
No public exploit is known, and the vulnerability is not in the KEV database. It is remotely exploitable with low complexity.
Upgrade to Apache IoTDB version 1.2.2 or later to address this vulnerability. Avoid deserializing data from untrusted sources.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2023-51656 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.
A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
From a weakness classification perspective (CWE-502): Insecure deserialization vulnerabilities allow attackers to inject malicious objects during deserialization, potentially enabling remote code execution.
