CWE-74Published: December 12, 2023· Updated: Jun 17, 2026
Official Description
In GL.iNET GL-AR300M routers with firmware 3.216 it is possible to inject arbitrary shell commands through the OpenVPN client file upload functionality.
Risk Analysis
GL.iNET GL-AR300M routers are vulnerable to arbitrary shell command injection via the OpenVPN client file upload feature. This allows an attacker to gain full control over the affected router.
The vulnerability is remotely exploitable with low complexity; however, no public exploit is currently known.
Update the router firmware to a version beyond 3.216 to address the command injection vulnerability.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2023-46456 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.
A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
