CVE-2023-33219
CWE-121Published: December 15, 2023· Updated: Jun 17, 2026
Official Description
The handler of the retrofit validation command doesn't properly check the boundaries when performing certain validation
operations. This allows a stack-based buffer overflow that could lead to a potential Remote Code Execution on the
targeted device
Risk Analysis
The retrofit validation command handler in Idemia Sigma firmware fails to properly check data boundaries, leading to a stack-based buffer overflow. This could allow an attacker to gain remote code execution.
No public exploit is known, and it is not in the KEV catalog. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable with low complexity.
Update the firmware to the latest version. Implement network segmentation to limit exposure of the device.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2023-33219 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.
A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
