CWE-119Published: February 26, 2026· Updated: Feb 27, 2026
Official Description
Improper handling of direct memory writes in the input-output memory management unit could allow a malicious guest virtual machine (VM) to flood a host with writes, potentially causing a fatal machine check error resulting in denial of service.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2023-31364 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
Exploitation requires low privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
From a weakness classification perspective (CWE-119): Buffer overflow vulnerabilities can lead to arbitrary code execution or denial of service by corrupting adjacent memory.
