CVE-2023-29405

CWE-74Published: June 8, 2023· Updated: Jun 17, 2026

9.8
CVSS v3.1

Official Description

The go command may execute arbitrary code at build time when using cgo. This may occur when running "go get" on a malicious module, or when running any other command which builds untrusted code. This is can by triggered by linker flags, specified via a "#cgo LDFLAGS" directive. Flags containing embedded spaces are mishandled, allowing disallowed flags to be smuggled through the LDFLAGS sanitization by including them in the argument of another flag. This only affects usage of the gccgo compiler.

Risk Analysis

The Go command is vulnerable to arbitrary code execution during build time when using cgo with the gccgo compiler. Malicious modules can smuggle disallowed linker flags through the LDFLAGS sanitization process.

No public exploit is known, and the vulnerability is not in the KEV catalog. It is remotely exploitable with low attack complexity.

Recommended Action

Update the Go toolchain to the latest version and avoid building untrusted modules.

Generated by the CTIWATCH analysis pipeline from this CVE's metadata (CVSS, EPSS, KEV status, exploit intelligence). Verify against vendor advisories before acting.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2023-29405 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.

The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.

A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
