CVE-2023-29402

CWE-94Published: June 8, 2023· Updated: Jun 17, 2026

9.8
CVSS v3.1

Official Description

The go command may generate unexpected code at build time when using cgo. This may result in unexpected behavior when running a go program which uses cgo. This may occur when running an untrusted module which contains directories with newline characters in their names. Modules which are retrieved using the go command, i.e. via "go get", are not affected (modules retrieved using GOPATH-mode, i.e. GO111MODULE=off, may be affected).

Risk Analysis

The Go command may generate unexpected code at build time when using cgo and processing untrusted modules with specific directory naming conventions. This can lead to unexpected program behavior.

No public exploit is known, and the vulnerability is not in the KEV catalog. It is remotely exploitable with low attack complexity.

Recommended Action

Update the Go toolchain to the latest version and avoid using untrusted modules in GOPATH-mode.

Generated by the CTIWATCH analysis pipeline from this CVE's metadata (CVSS, EPSS, KEV status, exploit intelligence). Verify against vendor advisories before acting.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2023-29402 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.

The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.

A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
