CVE-2023-29017

CWE-913Published: April 6, 2023· Updated: Jun 17, 2026

9.8
CVSS v3.1

Official Description

vm2 is a sandbox that can run untrusted code with whitelisted Node's built-in modules. Prior to version 3.9.15, vm2 was not properly handling host objects passed to `Error.prepareStackTrace` in case of unhandled async errors. A threat actor could bypass the sandbox protections to gain remote code execution rights on the host running the sandbox. This vulnerability was patched in the release of version 3.9.15 of vm2. There are no known workarounds.

Risk Analysis

The vm2 sandbox library fails to properly handle host objects during async error processing, allowing attackers to escape the sandbox and execute arbitrary code on the host. This critical vulnerability poses a significant risk to any environment relying on vm2 for code isolation.

No public exploit is currently known, and it is not in the KEV database. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable with low complexity.

Recommended Action

Update the vm2 library to version 3.9.15 or later to resolve the sandbox escape issue.

Generated by the CTIWATCH analysis pipeline from this CVE's metadata (CVSS, EPSS, KEV status, exploit intelligence). Verify against vendor advisories before acting.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2023-29017 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.

The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.

A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
