CWE-611Published: August 22, 2023· Updated: Jun 17, 2026

9.8
CVSS v3.1

Official Description

An XML External Entity (XXE) issue was discovered in Python through 3.9.1. The plistlib module no longer accepts entity declarations in XML plist files to avoid XML vulnerabilities.

NVD Source

Risk Analysis

The Python plistlib module is vulnerable to XML External Entity (XXE) attacks because it accepts entity declarations in XML files. This critical flaw could allow attackers to disclose sensitive information or perform other XML-based attacks remotely.

There is no known public exploit, and it is not in the CISA KEV. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable with low complexity.

Recommended Action

Upgrade Python to a version beyond 3.9.1 where entity declarations are restricted. Ensure that any XML parsing logic explicitly disables external entity resolution.

Generated by the CTIWATCH analysis pipeline from this CVE's metadata (CVSS, EPSS, KEV status, exploit intelligence). Verify against vendor advisories before acting.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2022-48565 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.

The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.

A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
