Risk Analysis

Mbed TLS is susceptible to heap-based buffer overflows and over-reads in DTLS when specific configurations are enabled. This critical vulnerability is remotely exploitable and carries a 9.8 CVSS score.

No public exploit is known, and it is not in the KEV catalog.

Recommended Action

Upgrade Mbed TLS to version 2.28.2 or 3.3.0 or later to remediate the buffer handling issues.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2022-46393 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.

The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.

A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
