Risk Analysis
Cisco IOS XR software's health check feature inadvertently opens TCP port 6379 by default upon activation, exposing a Redis instance within the NOSi container. This allows an attacker to connect to and access the Redis instance. The high EPSS score of 0.19129 and its inclusion in CISA's KEV catalog highlight the urgency and confirmed exploitation of this vulnerability.
This vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and is listed in CISA's KEV catalog. It allows remote access to a Redis instance.
Configure Cisco IOS XR software to close or restrict access to TCP port 6379, or disable the health check feature if not required. Implement strict network segmentation and firewall rules to protect internal services.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2022-20821 requires local access, meaning attackers must already have a foothold on the target system.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
CISA has added CVE-2022-20821 to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, confirming active exploitation in the wild. U.S. federal agencies are required to patch this within the mandated timeframe, and all organizations should treat remediation as urgent.
