CWE-787Published: July 13, 2022· Updated: Jun 17, 2026
Official Description
In read_attr_value of gatt_db.cc, there is a possible out of bounds write due to a missing bounds check. This could lead to remote code execution with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.Product: AndroidVersions: Android-12 Android-12LAndroid ID: A-228078096
Risk Analysis
A critical out-of-bounds write vulnerability exists in the Android Bluetooth GATT database handling. This flaw could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the device without user interaction.
No public exploit is known, and it is not in the KEV catalog. It is remotely exploitable with low attack complexity.
Ensure Android devices are updated to the latest security patch level to resolve this Bluetooth stack vulnerability.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2022-20222 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.
A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
From a weakness classification perspective (CWE-787): Out-of-bounds write vulnerabilities can lead to data corruption, crashes, or arbitrary code execution.
