CISA KEV Advisory
Linux Kernel Heap-Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Linux kernel contains a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the legacy_parse_param function in the Filesystem Context functionality. This allows an attacker to open a filesystem that does not support the Filesystem Context API and ultimately escalate privileges.
Apply updates per vendor instructions or discontinue use of the product if updates are unavailable.
Risk Analysis
This is a high-severity heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the Linux kernel's legacy_parse_param function within the Filesystem Context functionality. An attacker can exploit this to open a filesystem that doesn't support the API, leading to privilege escalation. Despite a low EPSS score of 0.01347, its inclusion in CISA's KEV catalog confirms it has been actively exploited.
This vulnerability has been actively exploited in the wild. Exploitation requires local access to the Linux system to escalate privileges.
Apply the latest security patches for the Linux kernel to address this vulnerability. Ensure systems are running supported kernel versions and implement robust access controls.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2022-0185 requires local access, meaning attackers must already have a foothold on the target system.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
CISA has added CVE-2022-0185 to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, confirming active exploitation in the wild. U.S. federal agencies are required to patch this within the mandated timeframe, and all organizations should treat remediation as urgent.
