CVE-2021-45423

CWE-120Published: March 13, 2023· Updated: Jun 17, 2026

9.8
CVSS v3.1

Official Description

A Buffer Overflow vulnerabilityexists in Pev 0.81 via the pe_exports function from exports.c.. The array offsets_to_Names is dynamically allocated on the stack using exp->NumberOfFunctions as its size. However, the loop uses exp->NumberOfNames to iterate over it and set its components value. Therefore, the loop code assumes that exp->NumberOfFunctions is greater than ordinal at each iteration. This can lead to arbitrary code execution.

Risk Analysis

A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in Pev 0.81 due to improper handling of array allocations in the pe_exports function. This flaw allows for arbitrary code execution, and its critical CVSS score of 9.8 reflects the high potential for system compromise.

There is no known public exploit for this vulnerability, and it is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. It is remotely exploitable due to the network-accessible nature of the flaw.

Recommended Action

Users should upgrade to a version of Pev beyond 0.81 if available. Implement standard input validation practices to prevent buffer overflow conditions.

Generated by the CTIWATCH analysis pipeline from this CVE's metadata (CVSS, EPSS, KEV status, exploit intelligence). Verify against vendor advisories before acting.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2021-45423 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.

The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.

A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 9.8.
