VMware vCenter Server Information Disclosure Vulnerability
VMware vCenter Server contains an information disclosure vulnerability in the VMware Directory Service (vmdir) when the Platform Services Controller (PSC) does not correctly implement access controls. Successful exploitation allows an attacker with network access to port 389 to extract sensitive information.
Apply updates per vendor instructions.
Risk Analysis
VMware vCenter Server has an information disclosure flaw in its Directory Service when access controls are improperly implemented. An attacker with network access to port 389 can extract sensitive information. The high EPSS score of 0.94355 indicates a very high probability of exploitation.
This vulnerability is actively being exploited in the wild and is included in CISA's KEV catalog. Its remote exploitability via network access to port 389 makes it a critical threat.
It is crucial to apply available patches for VMware vCenter Server to correct the access control issues in the VMware Directory Service and restrict network access to port 389.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2020-3952 requires local access, meaning attackers must already have a foothold on the target system.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
CISA has added CVE-2020-3952 to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, confirming active exploitation in the wild. U.S. federal agencies are required to patch this within the mandated timeframe, and all organizations should treat remediation as urgent.
