CVE-2019-3844
CWE-268Published: April 26, 2019· Updated: Jun 17, 2026
Official Description
It was discovered that a systemd service that uses DynamicUser property can get new privileges through the execution of SUID binaries, which would allow to create binaries owned by the service transient group with the setgid bit set. A local attacker may use this flaw to access resources that will be owned by a potentially different service in the future, when the GID will be recycled.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2019-3844 requires local access, meaning attackers must already have a foothold on the target system.
Exploitation requires low privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), full integrity compromise (data manipulation), availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 7.8.
A proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit exists for CVE-2019-3844. While not yet confirmed in active campaigns, the availability of PoC code increases exploitation risk substantially.
