CWE-19Published: August 19, 2015· Updated: Jun 17, 2026

7.5
CVSS v3.1

Official Description

The snmp_pdu_parse function in snmp_api.c in net-snmp 5.7.2 and earlier does not remove the varBind variable in a netsnmp_variable_list item when parsing of the SNMP PDU fails, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted packet.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2015-5621 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.

The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.

A successful exploit results in availability disruption (denial of service), with a CVSS base score of 7.5.

A proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit exists for CVE-2015-5621. While not yet confirmed in active campaigns, the availability of PoC code increases exploitation risk substantially.
