NVD-CWE-OtherPublished: October 12, 2015· Updated: Jun 17, 2026
Official Description
The JMX RMI service in VMware vCenter Server 5.0 before u3e, 5.1 before u3b, 5.5 before u3, and 6.0 before u1 does not restrict registration of MBeans, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via the RMI protocol.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2015-2342 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
A proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit exists for CVE-2015-2342. While not yet confirmed in active campaigns, the availability of PoC code increases exploitation risk substantially.
