CISA KEV Advisory
Microsoft Internet Explorer Use-After-Free Vulnerability
Microsoft Internet Explorer contains a use-after-free vulnerability that allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that triggers access to an object that (1) was not properly allocated or (2) is deleted, as demonstrated by a CDwnBindInfo object.
The impacted product is end-of-life and should be disconnected if still in use.
Risk Analysis
Microsoft Internet Explorer is affected by a use-after-free vulnerability, allowing remote attackers to execute arbitrary code. This occurs when a crafted website triggers access to improperly allocated or deleted objects, such as a CDwnBindInfo object. The high EPSS score of 0.91830 indicates a very high likelihood of exploitation, making this a critical concern. It is confirmed as exploited by CISA.
Active exploitation of this vulnerability has been observed in the wild. This flaw is remotely exploitable via malicious websites.
Ensure Microsoft Internet Explorer is fully updated or consider using a more modern, supported browser. Implement web filtering to block access to known malicious sites.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2012-4792 requires local access, meaning attackers must already have a foothold on the target system.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
CISA has added CVE-2012-4792 to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, confirming active exploitation in the wild. U.S. federal agencies are required to patch this within the mandated timeframe, and all organizations should treat remediation as urgent.
