CVE-2011-4517
CWE-787Published: December 15, 2011· Updated: Jun 16, 2026
Official Description
The jpc_crg_getparms function in libjasper/jpc/jpc_cs.c in JasPer 1.900.1 uses an incorrect data type during a certain size calculation, which allows remote attackers to trigger a heap-based buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code, or cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption), via a crafted component registration (CRG) marker segment in a JPEG2000 file.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2011-4517 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
From a weakness classification perspective (CWE-787): Out-of-bounds write vulnerabilities can lead to data corruption, crashes, or arbitrary code execution.
