CWE-119Published: November 5, 2010· Updated: Jun 16, 2026
6.9
CVSS v3.1
Official Description
Array index error in the apply_rcs_change function in rcs.c in CVS 1.11.23 allows local users to gain privileges via an RCS file containing crafted delta fragment changes that trigger a heap-based buffer overflow.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2010-3846 requires local access, meaning attackers must already have a foothold on the target system.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
From a weakness classification perspective (CWE-119): Buffer overflow vulnerabilities can lead to arbitrary code execution or denial of service by corrupting adjacent memory.
