CVE-2010-0013

CWE-22Published: January 9, 2010· Updated: Jun 16, 2026

7.5
CVSS v3.1

Official Description

Directory traversal vulnerability in slp.c in the MSN protocol plugin in libpurple in Pidgin 2.6.4 and Adium 1.3.8 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in an application/x-msnmsgrp2p MSN emoticon (aka custom smiley) request, a related issue to CVE-2004-0122. NOTE: it could be argued that this is resultant from a vulnerability in which an emoticon download request is processed even without a preceding text/x-mms-emoticon message that announced availability of the emoticon.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2010-0013 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.

The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction, making it a prime target for automated exploitation campaigns and worm-like propagation.

A successful exploit results in complete confidentiality breach (data exposure), with a CVSS base score of 7.5.

A proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit exists for CVE-2010-0013. While not yet confirmed in active campaigns, the availability of PoC code increases exploitation risk substantially.
