CWE-79Published: October 23, 2008· Updated: Jun 16, 2026
Official Description
The Fast Forward feature in Opera before 9.61, when a page is located in a frame, executes a javascript: URL in the context of the outermost page instead of the page that contains this URL, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2008-4697 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
From a weakness classification perspective (CWE-79): Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities allow attackers to inject malicious scripts into web pages viewed by other users.
