CVE-2008-4539
CWE-119Published: December 29, 2008· Updated: Jun 16, 2026
Official Description
Heap-based buffer overflow in the Cirrus VGA implementation in (1) KVM before kvm-82 and (2) QEMU on Debian GNU/Linux and Ubuntu might allow local users to gain privileges by using the VNC console for a connection, aka the LGD-54XX "bitblt" heap overflow. NOTE: this issue exists because of an incorrect fix for CVE-2007-1320.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2008-4539 requires local access, meaning attackers must already have a foothold on the target system.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
From a weakness classification perspective (CWE-119): Buffer overflow vulnerabilities can lead to arbitrary code execution or denial of service by corrupting adjacent memory.
