NVD-CWE-OtherPublished: April 11, 2007· Updated: Jun 16, 2026
Official Description
Buffer overflow in IrfanView 3.99 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via the (1) xoffset or (2) yoffset RLE command, or (3) large non-RLE encoded blocks in a crafted BMP image, as demonstrated by rle8of3.bmp and rle8of4.bmp.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2007-1948 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
A proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit exists for CVE-2007-1948. While not yet confirmed in active campaigns, the availability of PoC code increases exploitation risk substantially.
