NVD-CWE-OtherPublished: December 31, 2004· Updated: Jun 16, 2026
7.2
CVSS v3.1
Official Description
The systrace_exit function in the systrace utility for NetBSD-current and 2.0 before April 16, 2004, and certain FreeBSD ports, does not verify the owner of the /dec/systrace connection before setting euid to 0, which allows local users to gain root privileges.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2004-2012 requires local access, meaning attackers must already have a foothold on the target system.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
A proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit exists for CVE-2004-2012. While not yet confirmed in active campaigns, the availability of PoC code increases exploitation risk substantially.
