Official Description
Stack-based buffer overflow in the Agent Browser in Veritas Backup Exec 8.x before 8.60.3878 Hotfix 68, and 9.x before 9.1.4691 Hotfix 40, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a registration request with a long hostname.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2004-1172 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
A proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit exists for CVE-2004-1172. While not yet confirmed in active campaigns, the availability of PoC code increases exploitation risk substantially.
