Official Description
Sophos Small Business Suite 1.00 on Windows does not properly handle files whose names contain reserved MS-DOS device names such as (1) LPT1, (2) COM1, (3) AUX, (4) CON, or (5) PRN, which can allow malicious code to bypass detection when it is installed, copied, or executed.
Technical Analysis
CVE-2004-0552 can be exploited remotely over the network without requiring physical or adjacent access, significantly expanding the attack surface for threat actors.
Exploitation requires some privileges, which limits the exposure to scenarios where an attacker has already gained initial access.
A proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit exists for CVE-2004-0552. While not yet confirmed in active campaigns, the availability of PoC code increases exploitation risk substantially.
